The small village of Melanios is closely connected with the Massacre of Chios. Many people fled to Cape Melanios in 1822 intending in vain to board on small ships to Samos in their effort to survive from the horrific acts that occurred on the island by the Turks. Unfortunately, more than 10,000 people fell victims and more than 12,000 women and children were dragged into slavery. A Memorial honouring those people is displayed in the village. Not far from the village, there is a wind farm which replaced the old windmills of the settlement. Melanios celebrates on July 17th, on the feast day of Agia Marina.
